Who is 3Werks?
3Werks is wholly owned and operated by enthusiasts. Three longtime
friends who all share the same passion for their cars spent many times
talking about what the next mod would be, and what the next big model
would be in a brand's line-up. Excited to help each other with their
cars, as well as their friends cars, the three came up with a vision.
Why not create our own business where we can express our passion for
these cars even further? After a lot of "Yeah, it would be so cool
if..." talks the decision was finally unanimous to just go for it.
Jer Harwood:
In early 1995 when Jer was living in the mountains of North Carolina, he
was looking for a car to replace his '89 Ford Probe, and believe it or
not, was mainly looking at used Honda Accord's. He saw an ad in
the paper for new Volkswagen Jetta's on a special lease promotion, so
for kicks he went and drove one. After a test drive on some twisty
mountain roads he was sold. A base model 4-door sedan that was
more fun than his current 'sporty looking' 2-door coupe, and with a
lower monthly payment than a used Accord. Since
that time, Jer has owned 8 cars from the VAG family, and will
fully admit to his addiction of them. Somewhere along the way he
went from knowing almost nothing about any cars to filling his brain
with as much VW/Audi knowledge he could fit, both with what was
currently on the market and with the common problems that pop up with
the older models. He loves to fix things himself on his own cars,
and is always willing to give a hand with friend's cars. As for
the aftermarket, he's installed a number of things for his cars, friends
cars, along with modifying some of those modifications to his tastes.
Jer has
a passion that leans more towards the cosmetic side of things. His
current obsession is a 2006 VW GLI that has a few cosmetic
modifications, and a nice list of things to come, both performance and
cosmetic oriented.
Mike Gates:
Growing
up with his father owning and working on super beetles, Mike actually
didn’t really take to the VW scene. It wasn’t until around 1994 his
brother bought an ’84 Jetta that first sparked some interest within Mike
for VW’s. He couldn’t help but notice how tough the car was after being
through 2 previous owners, and with how rough his brother was on it, as
well as being a fun car to drive to boot. That car alone gave Mike a
good bit of respect for these cars. A couple years later, in the fall
of 1996 he was in the market for a new car, and saw an ad for the MKIII
GTI. He went for a test drive, and took the car home that day, and that
became the car that spurred him into modding. Moving ahead another 4
years, and the addiction spread to his (at the time) soon to be wife,
and shortly after they got married, they ordered a 2002 Golf TDI with
all the goodies. The current ride is a MKIV R32, with the wife having
the TDI (both with a few mods), but he still drives the old 2.slow GTI
on his lengthy commute to work (to keep the .:R in good shape). Who
would’ve thought this guy’s first vehicle was an ’88 Toyota 4WD pickup
lifted with many muddin’ times under it’s belt. You never know… In time
you may see that little 2.slow transformed into a not-so-slow beast by
the 3Werks team.
Chad Sadler:
The 5.0
Ford Mustangs. What are those? This guy knows, as those cars are what
got him into being more than just a driver. Whether it was cam swaps,
transmission work, complete engine swaps, or going to the drag strip,
Chad’s done it all. Going fast in a straight line was his game. It was
just recently in 2005, Chad started looking for something that would
give him luxury, performance, and fun. The B7 A4’s had just been
released, and after looking at a few other sport luxury sedans and
coupes he decided on the 4-ring badge. He picked up B7 A4 quattro 2.0T,
and added a few mods to it, including piecing together his own exhaust
combination. Being new to the Euro scene, this was a completely
different animal that he enjoyed, but something was missing. Four
things, as in 4 cylinders. When he got the A4 there were 8 B6 S4’s on
the lot. It was a little too steep for him at the time, but he said,
“If this S4 is still here in a year, I’ll come back for it.” The B7 was
traded in on the S4 a year to the day after. Back in a V8 again, Chad’s
grin is about constant when behind the wheel, and he’s got his luxury
too. Much is planned for the future of this beast. You’ll just have to
wait and see what this Domestic V8 veteran turns a Euro V8 into.
